The Detroit Lions improved to 11-1 with a hard-fought 23-20 victory over the Chicago Bears on Thanksgiving Day, but they were hit with several defensive injuries during the game.
Linebacker Malcolm Rodriguez suffered a season-ending torn ACL, while defensive linemen Josh Paschal, Levi Onwuzurike, and Mekhi Wingo were also forced to exit the game due to injury.
To address the growing injury concerns on their defense, the Lions are reportedly adding a player from an NFC rival’s practice squad.
According to NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero, Detroit is signing defensive lineman Jonah Williams off the Los Angeles Rams’ practice squad.
Williams has spent most of his four-year NFL career with the Rams and was part of their Super Bowl-winning team as a rookie.
This season, he has appeared in six games, recording three tackles (one solo), one tackle for loss, and one quarterback hit. Last year, he contributed 49 total tackles (20 solo), four tackles for loss, four QB hits, and two sacks.
One of the key absences for Detroit’s defensive line is Aidan Hutchinson, who suffered a broken fibula and tibia in Week 6.
Hutchinson, who was having a standout season with 7.5 sacks and 17 QB hits in just five games, could return if the Lions make it to the Super Bowl.
Despite these injuries, the Lions’ defense has performed admirably, ranking tied for third in points allowed per game, tied for third in passing touchdowns allowed, and second in defensive third-down conversion rate.
With tough upcoming matchups against the Green Bay Packers, Buffalo Bills, San Francisco 49ers, and Minnesota Vikings, Detroit’s defense will need to remain strong to help the team in its pursuit of their first Super Bowl title.
