Amon-Ra St. Brown: From the start, we knew Dan Campbell was committed to going for it on fourth-and-short.
Fourth downs played a key role in the Lions’ victory over the Packers on Thursday night: Detroit went for it five times and converted four, while the Packers opted to kick on every fourth down. Lions wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown says this was exactly what coach Dan Campbell had prepared the offense for.
St. Brown shared that Campbell had emphasized during preparations for the Packers that the offense should be ready to stay on the field for fourth-and-short situations, though even St. Brown wasn’t sure if Campbell would go for it on the final fourth-and-1, which set up the game-winning field goal as time ran out.
“We knew all game we were going for it if it was fourth-and-short. That last one, I wasn’t sure if we were going for it, but he said we were staying in,” St. Brown said.
St. Brown supported Campbell’s decision to go for a final first down to drain the clock before kicking the game-winning field goal, rather than kicking it earlier and giving the Packers around 35 seconds to potentially score.
“If you kick it and go for three, they have time to come back and win,” St. Brown said.
Campbell made the bold but correct choice, a decision that reflects his coaching style since taking over the Lions and one of the key reasons he’s turned the team from perennial losers into winners.
