Dan Campbell represents a dividing figure for some in the football world, consistently going for it on fourth down more than any other coach in the NFL during his time as the Detroit Lions’ head coach, now in his fourth season.

If the decision to attempt a 4th-and-short late in the game against the Packers had failed, and Green Bay had come back to tie or win on Thursday night, the conversation today would be entirely different. The decision ultimately only added four yards to the game-winning field goal attempt—a marginal difference—but was it worth the risk? Jared Goff tripping while handing the ball to David Montgomery only heightened the tension of the moment.

However, much of the discourse focuses on the result rather than the process. Campbell’s method is driven by instinct, confidence in his players, and a belief that often transcends pure analytics. When the outcome doesn’t align with that confidence, the decisions appear questionable.

Last Thursday night, the Lions converted 4-of-5 fourth downs.
