Lions’ Next Leader? Kelvin Sheppard Poised to Take Over as Defensive Coordinator

By now, many have heard the buzz surrounding Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn as a top candidate for a head coaching role this offseason. If Glenn does decide to leave, head coach Dan Campbell will face the challenge of finding his replacement. One name that stands out as a strong candidate is Kelvin Sheppard, the Lions’ current linebackers coach. In fact, some have already predicted that Sheppard will step into the defensive coordinator role by 2025.

Kelvin Sheppard Ready to Rise

On Wednesday, Sheppard addressed reporters and was asked if he felt prepared to take over as the Lions’ defensive coordinator if the opportunity arose. His response was both confident and humble. “I would be lying to you to say no,” Sheppard said, according to Justin Rogers. “Absolutely. And that’s what happens here. It’s not just the players within the building (who are developing), but it’s the coaches, as well.”

Sheppard went on to express his gratitude for the unique environment the Lions organization has created. “I’m very appreciative of the way that Dan, (general manager) Brad (Holmes), AG have structured this thing to kind of put you in leadership roles within your own room,” he explained. He also highlighted how Glenn has allowed him to contribute on a larger scale, saying, “There are many times AG allows me to speak up in front of the defense and things like that. They don’t have to do those things.”

A Unique Opportunity

Sheppard reflected on how rare these opportunities are, comparing his experience with stories he’s heard from colleagues around the league. “I have friends that coach in other buildings, and I know that they’re not afforded those opportunities, so I don’t take them lightly,” he said. “Every day I step foot in this place, it’s an unbelievable opportunity to grow as a person, as a player.”

Sheppard also spoke about the valuable lessons he’s learned from Campbell, both as a coach and as someone who previously played under him. “I had the ability to watch him operate, being in the locker room as a player down in Miami, and now as a coach. I can tell you I would rather not have the opportunity to learn from another man than him,” Sheppard said. He also credited Glenn for his impressive work in building the Lions’ defense over the past four years.

Focused on the Present

For now, Sheppard, Glenn, and the rest of the Lions coaching staff remain focused on the current season. With a league-best 12-1 record, the Lions are the favorites to win the Super Bowl, a testament to the strong foundation laid by Campbell, Glenn, and the entire staff.

Sheppard’s readiness to step up, paired with his passion for growth, underscores the depth of talent within the Lions organization. As the team chases its Super Bowl dreams, it’s clear their future is in good hands.
