Richie Saunders Becomes an Internet Sensation After ESPN ‘Tater Tot Story’
During the second half of the Kansas-UCF Big 12 Championship game, the announcers revealed an interesting fact about a BYU player that quickly went viral.
After a commercial break, Sean Farnham shared an intriguing detail about Richie Saunders’ family that many had never heard before.
“Richie Saunders’ great-grandfather invented tater tots. Which makes me like him even more.”
The jokes and nicknames immediately started pouring in: Richie “Tater Tot” Saunders. Richie “Give Me Your Tots” Saunders. King of Tots.
The reason the story spread so quickly was partly due to Saunders’ impressive performances this season. In his last ten games, Saunders has averaged more than 18 points, shooting 53 percent from the field and 40 percent from beyond the arc.
To top it off, he led BYU in scoring during the Big 12 tournament semifinals with 23 points in another efficient performance. Embracing his newfound fame, he had some fun with it after the win.
