The Detroit Lions boast the best running back duo in the NFL with Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery, so it makes sense they have a nickname.
For anyone who grew up in the ’90s and loved video games, you’ll appreciate that Montgomery and Gibbs have been dubbed “Sonic and Knuckles” after the iconic characters.
“Inside our room, there’s a lot of excitement. Our guys, ‘Sonic and Knuckles,’ it’s official now, and I’ve been told that’s what they want to be called,” running backs coach Scottie Montgomery shared last month.
In case you’re not familiar, Gibbs is Sonic due to his incredible speed, while Montgomery is Knuckles for his powerful, more physical style.
“If you watch David, he’s really into cartoons, Disney Channel, and Sonic and Knuckles,” Montgomery said. “Speed and the toughness of Knuckles. I know about it too because I have kids. Sonic and Knuckles, it fits, so I’m going with it.”
As the Lions prepare to face the Chicago Bears on Thanksgiving Thursday, CBS is running its usual promotional campaign for the game. One of their ads features both cartoon characters along with the Lions’ dynamic running back duo.
Props to Coach Montgomery, who might have a future in acting. However, he should probably stick to his coaching role, as his work with the Lions could lead to an even bigger opportunity in the future.
After impressive performances last year, both players are continuing their strong play into the 2024 season.
Gibbs is on track to exceed his rushing and receiving yard totals from last year, already matching his touchdown count. Meanwhile, Montgomery is poised for another 1,000-yard season, with Gibbs also looking like a lock for that achievement.
