Dan Campbell is very pleased with what Jameson Williams is bringing right now

For the second consecutive offseason, Jameson Williams was surrounded by plenty of buzz. After showing clear progress last year, expectations were high for an even bigger breakout this season. There was discussion about how new offensive coordinator John Morton was expanding his route tree, sparking ideas that he could challenge Amon-Ra St. Brown as the Detroit Lions’ primary option in the passing game.

After five games, that vision hasn’t fully materialized. Difficulties syncing with Jared Goff in Week 4 against the Cleveland Browns (two catches on eight targets) led many to anticipate a bounce-back effort from Williams in Week 5 versus the Cincinnati Bengals.

Williams finished with just one reception (on one target) for nine yards in that game. Yet, his presence as a vertical threat helped open opportunities for St. Brown (eight catches for 100 yards) and tight end Sam LaPorta (five receptions for 92 yards and a touchdown).

Williams’ blocking contributions often fly under the radar, but he has completely embraced the “no block, no rock” mindset that defines the Lions’ wide receiver group. That commitment is something coaches consistently value as an important piece of the team’s success.

Dan Campbell fully supports the work Jameson Williams is putting in

On Monday, head coach Dan Campbell was asked to expand on the impact Williams makes off the ball.

“He draws a lot of defensive focus whenever he’s on the field,” Campbell said. “Defenses don’t want him getting behind them, so they’ll often keep their safeties deep or use a shell coverage over the top.”

“So, a lot of the time, defenses play deep or roll coverage his way. That’s not always easy for a receiver, since you naturally want to contribute by making catches.”

“But he found other ways to make a difference and didn’t let it shake him. He stayed committed to helping teammates downfield and supporting the run game. He played tough, blocked hard, and showed up for his team. He’s a selfless player, and we love that about him.”
