Prediction: Ex-Lions Quarterback Matthew Stafford to Sign with Unlikely NFC Rival.

Matthew Stafford, the former Detroit Lions quarterback currently playing for the Los Angeles Rams, is predicted to sign with a surprising rival in the NFC, despite discussions about his retirement and future. While the Minnesota Vikings were initially speculated as a potential destination, a Bleacher Report feature has shifted the focus to another team for Stafford’s next move.

At 37, Stafford has continued to perform at a high level, despite his age. According to Brad Gagnon, an NFL analyst for Bleacher Report, Stafford will likely find himself in a similar situation to New Orleans Saints QB Derek Carr as either a free agent or trade candidate this offseason. Gagnon argues that although Stafford isn’t declining drastically, with the Rams having won a Super Bowl recently, Stafford may find his best opportunity in Seattle.

Gagnon suggests that teams like the Giants, Raiders, and Titans could have interest in Stafford, but he predicts Stafford might prefer to join a competitive Seahawks squad to finish his career. The Seattle Seahawks could view this as an opportunity to upgrade at quarterback with their playoff window still open. If the Rams move on from Stafford, they would save $27 million against the 2025 salary cap, a possibility if they determine Stafford’s age and performance no longer justify his contract.

Stafford would likely replace Geno Smith, who’s been solid but not immune to criticism. Gagnon also suggests Smith could be one of the quarterbacks joining the Jets next season, along with Sam Darnold of the Vikings. Stafford’s predicted move to Seattle would significantly alter the NFC landscape.

Despite the talk of retirement or a change of scenery, Stafford is currently battling a minor lateral ankle sprain after the Rams’ 21-14 win against the New Orleans Saints. Rams coach Sean McVay reassured reporters that the injury wouldn’t affect Stafford’s preparation for the upcoming game against the Buffalo Bills. Stafford, who suffered the injury in the second quarter, continued playing and threw for two touchdowns in the second half.
